Rep. Allor Opposes Governor’s 70-Day Extension
RELEASE|April 7, 2020

State Rep. Sue Allor, of Wolverine, today expressed support for the House having extended Michigan’s state of emergency until May 1 – a decision she said is in the best interest of Michiganders as the state continues to combat COVID-19. Today’s measure is separate from the Governor’s “shelter in place” order.

“The coronavirus has swept through our state and has greatly affected all of us,” Allor said. “I understand we all want to get back to our normal lives. The steps we take now to protect ourselves and our friends, family members and neighbors are crucial in slowing the spread of this virus and getting back to our regular routines.”

Rep. Allor said while she supports extending the emergency order through April, she did not agree with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s original proposal to extend it until the middle of June.

“The governor’s recommendation to extend our state of emergency into June was extreme,” Allor said. “It’s way too early, and there are too many uncertainties, to know where we will be in one month, let alone two.”

The emergency declaration can always later be extended if needed, Allor noted.

“As we learn more and continue to evaluate new data, we can extend the emergency order at shorter increments at time,” Allor said. “This is the best approach for Michiganders.”
Rep. Allor stressed the emergency order extension is not the same as extending the stay-at-home order.

“The measure passed by the House does not extend the stay-at-home order we’ve been under,” Allor said. “The governor could decide to make that call at a later time.”
Rep. Allor said she recognizes, and is proud of, all the sacrifices the people of Northeast Michigan have made.

“I know this has been hard on all of us, including our local business owners,” Allor said. “I continue to be concerned about the economic impact some of Gov. Whitmer’s orders have had on our local businesses.

“Please know I am mindful not just of your health and safety, but also of the economic hardships this has caused. I know it’s been very confusing and scary, but I have confidence we will get through this hard time together.”
