Rep. Alexander’s resolution to remind state employees of whistleblower protections passes House
RELEASE|December 17, 2020

The Michigan House this week adopted state Rep. Julie Alexander’s resolution reminding state employees of important whistleblower protections and encouraging them to come forward if they have knowledge of any irregularities or suspect activities.

Alexander, of Hanover, said it is crucial the public has confidence that individuals and agencies that violate the law or allocate state funds inappropriately are identified and held accountable.

“State law affords substantial protections to state employees who report violations or suspected violations of laws or rules,” Alexander said. “That’s why it’s important to remind state employees of whistleblower protections and encourage them to come forward when necessary.”

Alexander said when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer vetoed Senate Bill 686 in July, it demonstrated a lack of regard for good government practices and failed to further expand safeguards for state employees interested in protecting the interests of Michigan citizens.

“SB 686 would have prohibited a state department or agency from taking disciplinary action against certain state employees for communicating with certain individuals,” Alexander said. “The veto of such a measure was disappointing, to say the least.”
