State Rep. Julie Alexander, of Hanover, today issued the following statement, after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer highlighted during her Wednesday State of the State address the $400 per-vehicle insurance fee refunds that will be issued to Michigan drivers:
“In 2019, I worked with Republicans and Democrats in the Legislature to approve monumental reforms to our broken car insurance system. Because of that legislative success, Michigan drivers will receive a $400 refund for each insured vehicle this spring.
“These refunds originate from the cost-savings our reform plan has produced. With lower expenses, catastrophic claims fees have already been reduced for every Michigan driver. Even with reductions, the collected fees have accumulated into a large surplus, and the $400 per-vehicle refunds will return that extra money where it belongs — with Michigan families.
“Reduced and refunded fees are not the only relief our legislative plan has achieved. Families have been able to choose less expensive plans that weren’t previously available to them. These more affordable options have enabled some drivers to buy insurance for the first time.
“The Legislature led the way to reduce the price of car insurance, and Gov. Whitmer signed our plan into law. Reform took a bipartisan, legislative effort.”
