Rep. Alexander: Dairy Month highlights importance of vital industry
RELEASE|June 4, 2026

State Rep. Greg Alexander is recognizing the efforts and hard work of people who work in Michigan’s dairy industry with a recently adopted House resolution.

Alexander’s measure declares June as Dairy Month in Michigan. The state is home to more than 800 dairy farms and approximately 460,000 dairy cows that produce nearly 12 billion pounds of milk annually – the sixth-most of any state in the country.

“This industry is a cornerstone of our state’s agricultural economy and rural communities,” said Alexander, of Carsonville. “Dairy farming provides livelihoods to many throughout our region and the state. It has been woven into the fabric of Michigan for generations, and today our dairy farmers continue to lead the nation in innovation, productivity, and stewardship.”

HR 327 coincides with National Dairy Month, which has long been observed in June. When speaking on the resolution before the Michigan House, Alexander also noted that Michigan’s dairy industry is incredibly diverse – from large operations utilizing advanced robotic milking technology to small family farms and artisanal cheese makers.

“Large or small, dairy producers across our state are committed to producing safe, nutritious and high-quality products,” Alexander said. “This is an opportunity to celebrate the farmers and families who work every day, often before sunrise and long after sunset, to care for their animals and provide food for our communities. It’s a special shout out to the processors, truck drivers, veterinarians, nutritionists, and countless others who make this industry successful. It is also a chance to recognize the nutritional benefits that dairy products provide to families across Michigan and the nation.

“As someone who has spent much of my life working alongside agriculture and representing rural communities, I know firsthand the dedication and resilience of our farming families. Dairy producers face challenges ranging from weather and market volatility to rising input costs, yet they continue to provide for all of us. We’re incredibly thankful for them and all that they do.”

Michigan’s dairy industry contributes more than $8 billion in economic impact and supports over 110,000 jobs across the state.
