The Michigan House today approved Rep. Thomas Albert’s legislation to prohibit research on aborted fetal tissue in Michigan.
The state-level legislation comes after the Biden Administration rolled back federal research restrictions last year.
“We have the opportunity and the moral obligation to permanently prohibit this barbaric form of research in Michigan, and today’s vote is a significant step in the right direction,” said Albert, of Lowell. “Medical research is vital – but research on aborted babies is unacceptable and unnecessary. Research should focus on methods that do not involve the tissue and body parts of aborted fetuses.”
House Bill 5558 would prohibit research on a dead embryo, fetus or neonate obtained from an abortion. The bill also would ban donations of aborted fetal remains for research purposes.
House Bill 5559 would create a five-year felony for medical research using a dead embryo, fetus or neonate.
The legislation advances to the Senate for further consideration.
