Howell bill to assist Michigan veterans approved by House
RELEASE|February 21, 2020

The Michigan House of Representatives this week overwhelmingly approved a plan by state Rep. Gary Howell (R-North Branch) eliminating the fee for the special designation on Korean War veteran license plates. Howell’s measure is part of a bipartisan, multi-bill package removing the fees for various veteran and military designations on license plates.

“It is important that we honor the contributions of our veterans,” said Howell, who served in the U.S Army in Korea during 1970. “A veteran designation on a license plate helps to recognize those men and women who served during time of war. In the Korean War of 1950-53, our country fought successfully against communism. Due to our brave soldiers, South Korea remains free and prosperous to this day.”

Pursuant to state law, the Secretary of State provides for the issuance of all license plates in Michigan. There are differentiating fee requirements for each license plate set by the Legislature, including license plates for veterans.

“Honoring the sacrifices of our military veterans is not a partisan issue,” Howell said. “I am proud to have joined with legislators of both political parties and the secretary of state to pursue this legislation.”

House Bill 4683, along with the rest of the bills in the package, now move to the Senate for further consideration.
