State Representative James DeSana, R-Carleton, introduced a plan to provide financial relief to struggling Michigan residents by reducing property taxes for senior citizens and certain residential and agricultural property owners.

“Our elderly, middle class homeowners, and farmers are struggling the most to make ends meet in today’s economy,” said DeSana. “The state keeps adding more taxes to solve its problems, but that only creates more hardship for hardworking residents. We need to do more to protect those working extra hard to afford the daily necessities.”

The proposed legislation establishes a Senior Citizens Principal Residence Specific Tax to replace the standard property tax for eligible seniors, easing their financial burden. Additionally, the bills exempt qualifying residential and agricultural properties from the 6-mill State Education Tax, providing targeted relief for homeowners and actively working farmers while ensuring individuals with multiple properties do not receive multiple exemptions.

“The state needs to focus on helping all of our residents,” said DeSana. “We can’t keep neglecting our families, farmers and senior citizens. We need to build a better state for all Michiganders.”
