LANSING, MI – State Representative Angela Rigas (R-Alto) has been appointed to the newly formed Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses. This committee is tasked with addressing critical issues surrounding Michigan’s tip credit and paid sick time policies, which have sparked significant debate among employees and small business owners across the state.

Rep. Rigas expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve on this vital committee and thanked Speaker Matt Hall for entrusting her with this important responsibility.

“I am honored to be appointed to the Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses,” said Rep. Rigas. “Ensuring that our policies strike a balance between protecting employees and supporting the small businesses that drive our economy is essential for Michigan’s future. I am committed to working diligently alongside my colleagues to find solutions that preserve the tip credit system while addressing the needs of hardworking employees.”

Michigan’s tip credit system allows tipped employees, such as servers and bartenders, to earn a lower hourly wage supplemented by tips. Proposals to eliminate the tip credit have faced fierce opposition from workers who fear losing income and small business owners concerned about increased operational costs. The select committee aims to address these concerns while considering potential revisions to paid sick time requirements.

Rep. Rigas emphasized the importance of listening to the voices of those directly affected by these policies. “Our system is not broken, but it does require thoughtful consideration and input from the people it impacts most. I look forward to engaging with stakeholders to ensure their concerns are heard and addressed.”

Rep. Rigas, a dedicated advocate for small businesses and working families, brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to this critical role. As a member of this select committee, she will play a key part in shaping policies that uphold Michigan’s economic vitality while addressing the needs of its workforce.
