Whiteford advocates for new Caro facility at bipartisan Caro4Michigan Rally
RELEASE|August 27, 2019

State Rep. Mary Whiteford, chair of the House Health and Human Services budget committee, today addressed a crowd of supporters at the Caro4Michigan Rally on the Capitol steps.

Rep. Whiteford (R-Casco Township) has been an outspoken advocate for improved mental health care in Michigan since taking office, serving on the House C.A.R.E.S. Mental Health Task Force last term. The legislator also introduced legislation recently signed into law creating a psychiatric bed registry, allowing patients to be cared for more efficiently.

During her remarks, Whiteford referenced Michigan’s dire need for improved mental health care access.

“Research shows Michigan is among the five worst states for mental health care and people are crying out for help,” said Whiteford, a registered nurse. “I urge the administration to continue with the new facility as planned.”

Groundbreaking for the new Caro facility took place two years ago but construction was halted earlier this year after Gov. Whitmer took office.

“I attended the groundbreaking ceremony and marveled at how peaceful and healing the facility is,” Whiteford said. “But the building is beyond repair as it stands, and renovation isn’t what’s best for the patients of Caro. It’s time to resume construction on the new facility.”

Also speaking at the event were state Rep. Phil Green (R-Millington), state Rep. Jon Hoadley (D-Kalamazoo), former state Rep. Dr. Edward Canfield, Todd Tennis on behalf of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Tuscola County Sheriff Glen Skrent on behalf of the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association and Sen. Kevin Daley (R-Lum).

Supporters at the rally held signs that read “Build New. Maintain Care. Caro Strong!”

Rep. Whiteford said she continues to fight for a new Caro facility, participating in discussions with Department of Health and Human Services officials and the governor’s administration.
