VanWoerkom supports plan to reduce auto insurance rates
RELEASE|May 24, 2019

State Rep. Greg VanWoerkom today joined colleagues in approving a bipartisan plan to deliver significant rate relief for drivers across the state.

The House voted to approve legislation lowering rates by giving drivers more choice on personal injury protection coverage and combating fraudulent claims to help lower costs. The plan should soon be headed to the governor for her expected signature.

The bipartisan solution is designed to end Michigan’s long tenure as the state with the most expensive car insurance rates in the nation.

“For too long, Michigan has led in the wrong direction on auto insurance – resulting in excessive costs for drivers compared to every other state,” said VanWoerkom, of Norton Shores. “The mandatory requirement that all Michigan drivers have unlimited health care coverage is a government-imposed cost on Michigan families that in practice is being abused throughout the system.  The plan passed today will give West Michigan drivers choices in the level of coverage that meets their individual and family needs while providing the coverage they deserve.  This is a cost savings to the family budget that Michigan taxpayers have rarely felt.”

Michigan’s costs are high largely because it’s the only state mandating unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance. The bipartisan reform plan allows those currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options.

The legislation is Senate Bill 1.
