State Rep. Ryan Berman: House passes auto insurance reform, consumer protections key
RELEASE|May 24, 2019

State Rep. Ryan Berman today joined his House colleagues in approving a bipartisan plan to deliver significant rate relief for drivers across the state.

The House overwhelmingly voted to approve legislation guaranteeing lower rates by giving drivers more choice on personal injury protection coverage, stopping price gouging on medical services for car accident victims, and combating fraudulent claims. The plan, Senate Bill 1, will soon be headed to the governor’s desk and is expected to receive her signature.

The bipartisan solution aims to end Michigan’s long tenure as the state with the most expensive car insurance rates in the nation.

“It was one of my top priorities to lower rates for all Michigan drivers, and I am proud to deliver a solution that guarantees lower auto insurance rates,” Berman said. “This plan does the right thing to protect consumers and gives them a choice to select the car insurance plan that works best for them and their families.”

Michigan’s auto insurance premiums are high largely because it remains the only state mandating unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance, without any cost containment. The bipartisan reform plan phases in a fee schedule for medical procedures to rein in overall costs. Accordingly, this bill allows those currently using health coverage through their auto insurance plan to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options.
