Rep. Daniela García congratulates Division 4 State Football Champions, the Zeeland West Dux!

State Rep. Daniela García with the Division 4 State Champion Zeeland West Dux, January 28, 2016.

To recognize the 124th anniversary of Ellis Island in 2016, state Reps. Chris Afendoulis, Daniela García, Klint Kesto, Anthony Forlini and Peter Lucido decided to recite the famous Statute of Liberty poem, “The New Colossus,” to help honor their heritage and recognize that we are truly one nation of immigrants.

State Rep. Daniela García was first elected to serve the 90th District in the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2014. The 90th District encompasses parts of Ottawa County, including the cities of Holland, Hudsonville and Zeeland, and the townships of Holland, Jamestown and Zeeland.

García is vice chair of the committee on Education and is a member of the committees on Commerce and Trade, Health Policy and Regulatory Reform.

García is a graduate of West Ottawa High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan as well as a master’s degree in Education Policy and Administration from Catholic University.

Before taking office, Rep. García built up an impressive 10 years of public policy work at the federal and state levels. As an advisor to former U.S. Representative Pete Hoekstra, she assisted with the development of policy relating to K-12 and higher education as well as health care issues. García also worked for the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce as advisor to the chairman, working to reform the federal No Child Left Behind program. Most recently, she was employed by Spectrum Health, a not-for-profit health care system serving the West Michigan community.

Daniela is involved in the greater Holland community through a variety of organizations, and served on the boards of the Children’s After School Achievement Program (CASA), Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan, and Kids’ Food Basket.
