Chris Afendoulis was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2014. He represents the 73rd District, which includes the city of East Grand Rapids and the townships of Cannon, Courtland, Nelson, Oakfield, Plainfield, Spencer and Grand Rapids Charter Township.
Afendoulis is on the House Appropriations Committee, where is chair of the Community College subcommittee. He also is vice chair of the Subcommittee on Licensing and Regulatory Affairs/Insurances and Financial Services and will serve on the Corrections and School Aid/Michigan Department of Education subcommittees.
Afendoulis graduated from Forest Hills Northern High School in 1980. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business in 1984, majoring in accounting. He is a certified public accountant and certified global management accountant.
Afendoulis worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he audited governmental agencies, cities and banks as well as insurance, manufacturing and sales firms. He also worked as a financial executive with an automotive parts supplier in the private industry for 24 years, holding the title of vice president of finance from 2000 through May of 2013.
In addition, Afendoulis is a co-owner of his family business, Afendoulis Cleaners and Tuxedos.
Afendoulis is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.
PUBLIC OFFICE AND AFFILIATIONS
Afendoulis first ran for public office in 2004, when he was elected Grand Rapids Township trustee. He served in that position until being appointed township treasurer in 2007. He was also appointed to a three-year term on the John Ball Zoo Advisory Board by the Kent County Commission in January 2003.
Afendoulis previously served as a member of the Forest Hills Schools Fine Arts Center Foundation Board and the University of Michigan Alumni Association, and he served on the board of the University of Michigan Club of Grand Rapids during the 1990s.
A lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Grand Rapids, he has served two separate terms on its parish council and was president of the council from 2001 through 2004.
Chris and his wife Phyllis have three daughters and live in Grand Rapids Township.
