State Rep. Jim Runestad was first elected to serve in the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2014. He represents the 44th District, which includes the residents of Highland Township, White Lake Township, Springfield Township, Milford Township and parts of Waterford Township, as well as the Village of Milford.
Runestad serves as chair of the House Judiciary Committee. He is also a member of the Insurance, Communications and Technology, and Local Government committees.
Runestad graduated from Central Michigan University with a B.S. in Education and a concentration in History, Economics and Politics.
Immediately after graduating, Runestad began working in the insurance industry and for the last 13 years has been operating his own insurance company, Runestad Financial Associates LLC.
PUBLIC OFFICE AND AFFILIATIONS
Prior to his election to the state House, Runestad spent three terms as an Oakland County commissioner, where he was chairman of both the Public Services Committee and Planning & Building Committee. During his six-year tenure, Runestad worked with various county commissions to improve the level of Friend of the Court services. He also assisted the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative on the Proposition 2 ballot initiative, ending race preferences in government hiring and education.
Runestad was an active member of the North Oakland Board of Realtor Legislative Affairs and Grievance Committees, as well as having been involved with other various activities in the local Chamber of Commerce.
In 2003, Runestad was elected to the then Waterford Republican Club, where he aided in reorganizing it into the North Oakland Republican Club.
Runestad and his wife, Kathy, reside in White Lake and Waterford. There, they’ve raised five children: Joel, Justin, Lena, Lee and Kayla.
