DISTRICT State Rep. Joel Johnson was first elected in November 2010 to the Michigan House to represent the residents of Clare, Gladwin, Arenac and part of Osceola County including Evart city and the townships of Evart, Hersey, Highland, Marion, Middle Branch, Orient, Osceola, Sherman and Sylvan. He was re-elected to a third term for the 2015-16 Michigan Legislature.
Johnson is the chair of the committee on Workforce and Talent Development. He is also a member of the committees on Agriculture, Commerce and Trade and Judiciary.
EDUCATION Johnson earned a degree in Agricultural Business Management from Michigan State University and is a former FFA chapter president.
PROFESSIONAL Prior to election, he was manager of a Clare business, Johnston Elevator. Johnson is the owner/operator of a small, local farm and he has worked for large corporations, small corporations and local cooperatives. He is a former president of the Clare Area Chamber of Commerce and served as a board member for Michigan Agri-Business Association and the Clare County Farm Bureau where he worked with state and federal lawmakers on behalf of agriculture issues.
PERSONAL Johnson, born in Saginaw, was raised in Merrill. He and his wife Dawn have been married for over 30 years. They have four children and eight grandchildren. The Johnsons enjoy hunting, motorcycling, gardening, waterskiing, exercising, and taking part in many family activities. He and his family are active in the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Harrison. Johnson is a member of the Clare County MSU Alumni, Clare Rotary Club, local and national Right To Life, and National Rifle Association. Johnson is a long-time supporter of 4-H and a former volunteer for Boy Scouts of America.
