State Representative Daniela R. García presented tributes to Holland Police Officer Sgt. Larry Matzen and Holland Firefighter Bret Groendyke for being named police officer and firefighter of the year. García presented the tributes at the Holland Department of Public Safety on Friday afternoon.
Sgt. Matzen has been with the Holland Department of Public Safety for more than 19 years. “Each day, police officers put their lives in harm’s way. It’s not just something that they do, it is who they are,” García said. “Sgt. Matzen has demonstrated a high level of professionalism and his commitment to serving and protecting our community deserves our respect.”
Groendyke, a four-year veteran of the fire department, was nominated by his peers for his community outreach initiatives and exemplary public service. “Firefighters extinguish blazes that destroy homes and businesses. Realistically, they do much more than save buildings, they save lives and preserve memories,” García said. “Through his dedicated efforts with the Holland Fire Department, Bret has clearly demonstrated why he was nominated and selected for this honor,” García said.
