Legislator: Incremental extensions more sound, maintain balance of power

State Rep. Douglas Wozniak, of Shelby Township today said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s request of the Legislature to extend a current statewide emergency declaration by an additional 70 days is excessive.

The governor is seeking the extension, which comes with additional executive powers, due to the coronavirus outbreak in Michigan. The amount of cases statewide surpassed 10,000 on Thursday, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Macomb County has reported over 1,300 cases as of Thursday, including 58 deaths.

“This is a rapidly changing situation and we need to be flexible as we address it,” Wozniak said. “I believe that as this public health emergency continues, the governor should be granted additional authority to keep people safe. I don’t believe a steadfast, 70-day issuance provides flexibility. It merely grants power for an arbitrary period. We can continue to evaluate the outbreak in real time and make decisions as necessary in shorter windows.

“This request from the governor requires legislative approval by law. Adhering to the law respects the will of the people and allows their concerns to be heard through those they elect to represent them in Lansing.”

Wozniak is continuing his work for Macomb County as the coronavirus outbreak unfolds and is available to anyone who has questions or concerns. His office can be reached by phone at (517) 373-0843 or email at [email protected].
