Legislator: Macomb residents need somewhere to turn

State Rep. Doug Wozniak, of Shelby Township, today said he is disappointed and outraged by the governor’s decision to halt construction of a much-needed state psychiatric facility expansion project and is deeply concerned for Michigan’s mental health community.

The project to update the Caro Center state psychiatric facility began after approval by the previous administration, a decision Gov. Whitmer now plans to re-evaluate.

“Michigan’s mental health care system is in desperate need of resources,” said Wozniak, who serves on the House Health Policy Committee and is a practicing elder law attorney. “The Legislature and former governor worked thoughtfully and strategically to develop the plans and approve funding to fulfill our state’s need and help the people of Michigan, now Gov. Whitmer is undoing all of their hard work and wasting millions of taxpayer dollars in the name of party politics.”

The Caro Center was chosen for this project because it is centrally located for more than 80 percent of the center’s patients and the majority of its employees. Its 650 acres with access to power and water services and existing administration building make the center a perfect location for a state psychiatric hospital.

The proposed hospital would replace current buildings and offer a safe, clean and updated hospital for 200 people. The current facility can only hold 79 people due to its aging infrastructure.

The project construction was already $3 million into its budget when the governor announced her decision.

“The Caro facility was a great location for the new psychiatric hospital, and would have benefitted Macomb County residents in need of care,” Wozniak said. “The governor’s decision to reconsider this project is a waste of valuable time and money needed to get Michigan’s mental health care system on track. I hope she will reconsider.”
