Rep. Wozniak: No-fault plan is complex, but it’s a great start to meaningful reform

State Rep. Doug Wozniak of Shelby Township today issued the following statement in response to the Michigan House approving no-fault auto insurance reform:

“The House-approved no-fault reform plan is not perfect but it is a great first step in leading the way to a better Michigan. Lowering car insurance rates for all Michigan drivers may seem straightforward at a quick glance, but as history would tell, reform efforts are much more complex.

“With so many moving parts in the equation, even the best compromise leaves everyone uneasy. As a long-time advocate of Michigan’s no-fault auto insurance system’s best-in-the-nation medical benefits, I was prepared to vote ‘yes’ without being 100-percent satisfied.

“Chair Wentworth and his special panel did a great job getting every stakeholder to come in, testify and actually have a seat at the decision-making table. It was a process I trusted, and the sole reason I was willing to cast my vote for a plan that didn’t represent my entire wish list, but reflected well-thought-out compromises.

“The plan preserves unlimited no-fault benefits, implements a much-needed fee schedule, guarantees rate reductions, and increases transparency within the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association to combat fraud.

“So the bottom line is this, this plan allows Macomb County drivers and their families to save more of their hard-earned money and strengthens consumer protections – values that I will always be honored to vote in support of.”
