First term lawmaker named to five committee posts

State Rep. Doug Wozniak of Shelby Township has been appointed to serve on five committees for the 2019-2020 legislative term, providing a unique opportunity to help the residents of Macomb County on a variety of important issues facing the state.

Wozniak is set to serve as the vice chair of the House Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, and also serve on the House Judiciary; Health Policy; Communications and Technology; and Families, Children and Seniors committees. Committee appointments were announced this week by House Speaker Lee Chatfield.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to touch a range of policy areas affecting Macomb families,” Wozniak said. “I am committed to ensuring legislation moving through the House will better serve the interests of Macomb residents, and I look forward to getting to work with my colleagues and bringing innovative ideas to the table.”

The House Judiciary Committee will be one of a select few panels with the authority to report legislation to the House floor for consideration. In addition to handling issues related to Michigan’s criminal justice system, the panel will review and vet legislation from any House committee that creates or changes criminal penalties in the state. The Judiciary Committee will further debate how the new penalties fit into the wider criminal justice reform effort.

“This committee will act as an extra layer of inspection for plans originating in other committees,” Wozniak said. “It’s important we have this extra review process to deliver policies that best serve Michigan families.”

On top of serving, Wozniak is a practicing attorney who specializes in elder law and Medicaid planning for senior citizens. He’s also taken an active interest in senior programs and is involved with helping develop greater activities for seniors and their families.

“Because of my familiarity and expertise working within these important issues, I believe I can be an asset during the legislation-making process and deliver good, sound policy to Macomb families,” Wozniak said. “I cannot wait to roll up my sleeves and get to work when it comes to serving on the House Health Policy and Families, Children and Seniors committees.”

Rep. Wozniak is currently in his first term serving the 36th House District, which includes part of Macomb County, Bruce, Washington and part of Shelby Township and the Village of Romeo.
