Rep. Wozniak: Governor remains compelled to work around Legislature with extended ‘stay home’ order

Directive, with loosened restrictions, extended through May 15

State Rep. Douglas Wozniak, of Shelby Township, today criticized Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s extension of a ‘stay home’ order through May 15 in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak.

“The governor adopted some of the recommendations the Legislature recently made regarding certain sectors being safe enough to get people back to their livelihoods,” Wozniak said. “But there are still constructive, proactive ways to balance this public health emergency with our state’s current economic emergency.”

Some suspended activities under the most recent directive can resume. This includes landscapers, lawn-service companies and nurseries as well as retailers selling “non-essential” items through curbside pick-up or delivery. Large box stores can reopen areas that had been cordoned off and bike repair and maintenance shops can also come back online, as long as strict social distancing measures are kept in place.

Wozniak noted additional elements of a previously unveiled House plan for re-opening Michigan’s economy could be safely implemented.

“This is a plan I would like to see from the governor,” Wozniak said. “It would get more people back to work while our state works to emerge from this crisis healthy and strong.”

In a Friday House session, Wozniak supported a resolution creating a special committee that will examine decisions made by the governor during the ongoing public health emergency in an effort to cultivate best practices.

“The governor has displayed broad authority in exercising executive power and with the power of the veto, there is little way for the Legislature to be a part of the solution,” Wozniak said. “That’s an issue, as our government is structured on balance and people having their voice heard through their elected leaders.

“This committee will dedicate itself to holding state government accountable as it makes decisions related to this ongoing situation. It’s important to be transparent and give people who have been flooding our offices with calls and emails their say to the administration.”
