Rep. Whiteford launches social media challenge to raise awareness about human trafficking
RELEASE|March 13, 2020

Michigan is second in the nation for human trafficking complaints

State Rep. Mary Whiteford today launched a social media challenge to help raise awareness about human trafficking in Michigan.

Whiteford, of Allegan County’s Casco Township, said most Michigan residents have little awareness about human trafficking. Many believe human trafficking is the kidnapping of young women who are then sold as sex slaves – and they think it only happens in other countries or states like New York and California.

“The reality is that Michigan is second in the nation when it comes to human trafficking complaints,” Whiteford said. “The other sad reality is that most cases of human trafficking involve a victim that is trafficked by a member of their own family.”

To raise awareness of this often hidden crime, Whiteford issued a social media challenge in conjunction with a legislative plan she introduced this week to support survivors of human trafficking and help them rebuild their lives after escaping their captors.

She is asking people to post a picture or video of themselves holding a sign – handmade is fine – that says, “Stop Human Trafficking.” She recommends using the hashtag #SaveMichigansChildren at the bottom of the sign. She then encourages people to post the picture on social media using the same hashtag, tag five people and issue the challenge to them.
