Rep. Webber’s vote extends landmark car insurance reforms to Michigan drivers
RELEASE|May 9, 2019

State Rep. Michael Webber of Rochester Hills today issued the following statement in response to the Michigan House approving no-fault auto insurance reform:

“As a long-time supporter of Michigan’s no-fault auto insurance system and the life-saving benefits it provides for injured drivers, I fought to continue the current structure as an option while also providing drivers choices that better meet their families’ needs.

“The House-approved plan allows more motorists to be insured, which is better than no insurance at all – making our roads safer for everyone. It also reins in costs, guarantees lower rates for all Michigan families, cracks down on fraud, addresses non-driving factors, and allows seniors with retirement health coverage to opt out.

“Oakland County drivers have seen the status quo grow out of control and demand change. The time for reform is right now. I introduced legislation earlier this session to require an independent audit of the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association and provide proper oversight over rate making. Both of these proposals are incorporated into the House plan I supported.

“More work will be needed to get this bill across the finish line, and negotiations with our partners in the Senate and the governor will continue. Michiganders are relying on their elected officials to come together in a bipartisan fashion to get this done.”
