Rep. Webber bill honors former member of Congress from Oakland County
RELEASE|September 26, 2019

A proposal recently introduced by state Rep. Michael Webber, of Rochester Hills, would name a section of Rochester Rd. from Tienken Rd. to I-75 the ‘Congressman William S. Broomfield Memorial Highway.’

Broomfield passed away in February at the age of 96 and had an extensive history of civil service, representing Oakland County in both Lansing and Washington, D.C.

“Mr. Broomfield spent much of his life working to better the lives of residents in Oakland County,” Webber said. “He served with immense dedication and civility while understanding the extraordinarily important role of representing the voice of the people in a government body.”

Born in Royal Oak and a veteran of World War II, Broomfield served in Congress for 36 years from 1957 until his retirement in 1993. He was the ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee for 18 years in the midst of the Cold War through the fall of the Berlin Wall. The foreign affairs experience allowed Broomfield to be a part of a delegation that traveled to China in 1974 as the United States restored diplomatic relations with the communist nation.

Before going to Washington, Broomfield served in the Michigan House beginning in 1948 and became speaker pro tempore in 1953. He was elected to the state Senate in 1955.

State Sen. Mallory McMorrow, of Royal Oak, has sponsored similar legislation in honor of Broomfield.

“Congressman Broomfield’s lifetime of dedication and service to our community and country stands as a model for us, even today,” McMorrow said. “He recognized our nation’s unique position in the world and led with respect and fairness, most notably on his vote in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which he frequently cited as his proudest vote. I’m proud to sponsor this legislation to honor his life and work.”

The Michigan Memorial Highway Act was enacted in 2001 and allows for the naming of bridges and highways within the state. Webber’s bill, House Bill 5014, has been referred to the House Transportation Committee for consideration.
