Rep. Wakeman introduces plan helping expecting parents with income taxes
RELEASE|September 3, 2019

Rep. Rodney Wakeman today introduced a plan to allow expecting parents to claim an income tax exemption for their soon-to-be newborns.

The plan would extend Michigan’s existing exemption for children to fetuses of at least 12 weeks at the end of the tax year.

“I don’t consider this a new tax exemption – just a logical extension of an exemption for children that Michigan already allows,” said Wakeman, of Saginaw Township. “Expecting parents are faced with additional expenses and our tax law should reflect that reality. This change would help offset costs of prenatal care and welcoming a newborn into the world.”

Wakeman’s measure, House Bill 4914, has been referred to the House Tax Policy Committee.

“A child in the womb is a family member – plain and simple,” Wakeman said. “Parents of unborn children deserve the same rights as other parents, including when it comes to tax law.”
