Rep. Vaupel will not support Whitmer’s plan for 45-cent gas tax hike

House roads plan focuses on efficient spending, not increased taxes

State Rep. Hank Vaupel, of Fowlerville, today called Gov. Whitmer’s comments toward the Legislature unnecessary and deceiving.

“The governor claims the House’s plan to fix the roads is unrealistic, but her plan forces drivers to pay the highest gas taxes in the nation – there’s nothing realistic about that,” Vaupel said. “If the governor wants to know what Michiganders think about her plan, I welcome her to visit my office to hear and see the many calls and emails from the people of Livingston County on the matter.”

The governor’s budget proposal would force drivers to pay an additional 45 cents per gallon of gas, costing them $6 to $10 more per fill up.

“The House budget plan I supported forces the government to operate more efficiently, rather than saddling drivers with a tax increase,” Vaupel said. “That’s a plan I feel good about bringing home to my friends and neighbors in Livingston County.”

In June, the House approved a budget plan that adds more than $800 million a year to fixing roads without a tax increase and raises the state’s minimum per-pupil foundation allowance by $180, affecting a majority of Michigan school districts. All districts statewide would receive at least $90 more per student as part of a $226 million foundation allowance increase in the K-12 budget.

Provisions in the Michigan Constitution require action on a state budget before the new fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
