Rep. VanWoerkom votes to support lakeshore conservation and expand recreation opportunities
RELEASE|February 28, 2019

State Rep. Greg VanWoerkom voted this week in favor of a plan to complete an extensive six-mile lakefront recreation and conservation project stretching from near Grand Haven’s North Pier in Ottawa County to Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon County.

The legislation approved by the House Appropriations Committee, with VanWoerkom’s support, includes $3.8 million to acquire approximately 160 acres for the final phase of the Ottawa Sand Phase II project— a 353-acre property planned to be developed for day use, swimming, fishing, hiking and camping.

“Visitors from all over the country come to enjoy the unmatched beauty of our lakeshore,” said VanWoerkom, of Norton Shores. “These visitors support our local businesses and economy, and we need to make sure we take the proper management steps to ensure these resources are available for generations to come. I am glad to see this important project enter its next phase.”

The full plan includes $26 million for 34 recreational development projects and 30 land acquisition projects statewide, including the Ottawa Sand Phase II project.  The project investments outlined in the proposal were recommended by the Natural Resources Trust Fund Board in December. Recommendations are subject to approval by the Michigan Legislature, a process started with this week’s House Appropriations Committee vote. House Bill 4244 next advances to the House floor for further consideration.

Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from the development of minerals on state land and is designated on an annual basis in partnership with local governments.
