A bill introduced by state Rep. Bradley Slagh protecting Michigan taxpayers who buy subdivided property today was approved overwhelmingly in a Michigan House vote.

House Bill 4055 addresses the issue of unpaid property taxes on land proposed for subdivision. Slagh, who was Ottawa County’s treasurer from 2007-18, crafted the plan to make sure new owners aren’t responsible for unpaid property tax bills of previous owners.

“We’re always looking for ways to make our state more attractive for current and prospective residents,” said Slagh, of Zeeland. “Sticking them with an unpaid property tax bill from a previous owner doesn’t accomplish that. There also can be serious issues as a result of unpaid taxes – including potential tax foreclosure – and this plan is a simple, necessary solution that ensures fairness and will prevent hassles from bubbling up in the future.”

Slagh said the legislation will also aid local governments, who rely on prompt property tax payments for revenue and funding vital services citizens rely on.

The first-term legislator previously worked in financial services, holds a real estate license and served as Zeeland Township supervisor and Ottawa County treasurer.

HB 4055 advances to the Senate for consideration.
