State Rep. Brad Paquette today announced a bipartisan plan to bring more prestige to teachers that have made a difference in the lives of their students.

Paquette’s proposal would create the Made a Difference Teacher Fund which Michigan taxpayers could voluntarily contribute to when filing their annual income tax returns. Residents would also be able to nominate a teacher that made a difference in their lives to receive a $1,000 award from the fund.

“Teachers get into the profession because they seek to make a difference in the lives of our youth,” Paquette said. “Oftentimes, students are unaware of the impact a teacher has had on them until they go out into the world and recognize what that teacher actually did for them.”

Paquette, a Republican of Niles, introduced the plan along with Rep. Nate Shannon, a Democrat from Sterling Heights. Both were teachers before their election to the Legislature.

“Teachers have one thing undoubtedly in common — they hope to better the lives of the learners they encounter,” Paquette said. “Teachers educate, inspire and encourage. Teachers have an abundance of love for others and they serve as role models.  They understand that the tree is in the seed.  The Made a Difference Teacher initiative will be a fantastic way of allowing former students to show their appreciation and gratitude for those teachers that have invested in their lives through our system of education.”

Paquette said the legislation was inspired by a suggestion from a resident at one of his local coffee hour meetings in Buchanan. The proposal will not cost the state any more in general taxes because all contributions will be voluntary.

“Some of the best ideas come from listening to residents, and this one offers a unique way to recognize teachers and the incredible contributions they make to our communities across the state,” Paquette said.

Paquette has supported several initiatives for teachers, including voting for record investments in K-12 education and sponsorship of an Outstanding Educator Award. He serves as vice chair of the House Education Committee.

House Bills 5165 and 5166 will be formally read into the record next week.
