Rep. O’Malley pledges support for Northern Michigan after governor’s stay-at-home order
RELEASE|March 23, 2020

State Rep. Jack O’Malley, of Lake Ann, today issued the following statement after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a stay-at-home executive order, which will go into effect March 24 at 12:01 a.m. and continue through April 13. The order allows for certain essential business and activity to continue. The governor reported Monday morning there are now over 1,200 positive cases of coronavirus – or COVID-19 – in Michigan:

“These are uncertain times, but I knew when I went to Lansing that I was going to work representing the Fighting 101st House District. I know people in Northern Michigan will fight hard to mitigate spread while protecting themselves, their families and our communities.

“The governor is taking advice from many folks, including top medical professionals. I believe she is doing the best she can with the facts she is being presented with. This is an unprecedented situation and she is making these decisions rooted in the firm belief that it will keep people safer while our health care systems don’t get overwhelmed from increased cases. That is a critical part of this equation as cases continue to rise.

“The majority of cases in our state are centered in southeast Michigan, but over 30 counties have reported positive cases – including one in Leelanau County. By adhering to what medical experts are strongly recommending – such as staying at home as much as possible, washing your hands frequently and distancing from others when you need to go out for essentials – we can get this done and get back to normal. Michigan was named the ‘arsenal of democracy’ for our production prowess in World War II. We can come together again to come out of this stronger. But it’s going to take good practices and an abundance of patience.

“If anyone has questions or concerns, please contact my office by phone at 517-373-0825 or email at [email protected]. The Michigan Legislature has made this situation a top priority, and I will be with you every step of the way.”
