Former police officer introduces important House resolution

State Rep. Mike Mueller has introduced a resolution commemorating Law Enforcement Mental Health Awareness Day in Michigan.

Mueller, a former police officer, said law enforcement personnel face a higher risk of stress-related mental illness, such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

“Unlike most other professions, law enforcement officers witness many traumatic incidents, which sadly elevates their risk for developing mental illness,” said Mueller, of Linden. “The number of law enforcement officers in the U.S. who died by suicide have outnumbered those who died in the line of duty for the past three years.”

Experts estimate up to 35 percent of law enforcement officers experience some form of PTSD, which is linked to increased risk of depression, suicide and substance abuse related death.

Mueller said several barriers prevent law enforcement officers from seeking necessary treatment and only 3 to 5 percent of agencies across the U.S. have suicide prevention training programs.

“I’m thankful to have a platform where I can raise awareness for this heartbreaking issue,” said the first-term legislator. “I have witnessed the effects of mental illness on many of my brothers and sisters in law enforcement and I am committed to doing all I can to help them and others like them.”

The resolution was overwhelmingly approved by the Michigan House of Representatives.
