Rep. Meerman sets up Nativity scene at state Capitol

State Rep. Luke Meerman, of Coopersville, took over the informal tradition of setting up a Nativity scene on the east lawn of the Michigan Capitol building today.

For five years, former Sen. Rick Jones took it upon himself to obtain a multi-day permit for the Nativity scene. Sen. Jones would then personally travel to the Capitol each morning to set up the display and, to comply with House rules, return to dismantle it by 9 p.m. After Sen. Jones termed out of office last year, Rep. Meerman decided to carry on his tradition.

“Seeing a Nativity scene on the Capitol lawn is a joyful way to remind us all of the true meaning of Christmas,” Rep. Meerman said. “I’m very honored to carry on this important tradition.”
