U.P. legislator proposes using former prison as training academy

State Rep. Greg Markkanen today said he is fighting to repurpose a vacant Upper Peninsula prison facility.

The House’s corrections budget includes funding to study potential locations for a training academy for corrections officers. Markkanen, of Hancock, proposed an amendment adding the former Ojibway Correctional Facility in Gogebic County’s Marenisco Township to the list of locations under consideration.

“The closure of the Ojibway prison devastated the surrounding communities,” Markkanen said. “Rather than letting the vacant facility continue to deteriorate and turn into a community eyesore, we now have a chance to breathe new life into the building and fulfill the state’s need for a training facility.”

The amended corrections budget passed the House today, advancing it to the Senate for consideration.
