Legislators would forfeit pay after missed deadline
State Rep. Peter Lucido of Shelby Township co-sponsored legislation introduced Wednesday to require the Michigan Legislature to present a balanced budget to the governor by July 1 each year.
The joint resolution proposes amending the Michigan Constitution to establish the July 1 deadline and ensure legislators adhere to it. Should the Legislature fail to complete the budget in time, representatives and senators would forfeit their daily salaries until the governor receives the budget.
“One of the most important jobs we have as legislators is to pass a balanced budget,” Lucido said. “The state spending plan doesn’t do much good if it’s not passed until three months after Macomb County governments and school districts need to know their funding levels.”
Lucido said he likes the idea of imposing a penalty if legislators can’t come up with a balanced budget.
“It’s simple – do your job or you don’t get paid,” Lucido said.
If House Joint Resolution X is approved by two-thirds of both the House and Senate, the measure would be placed on the ballot for voter consideration.
It was referred to the House Appropriations Committee.
