Rep. Lower: Michigan must preserve legal protections for unborn children
RELEASE|May 14, 2019

State Rep. Jim Lower speaks in support of House Resolution 23 today in the Michigan House.

State Rep. Jim Lower’s resolution to declare the House’s intention of preserving legal safeguards for unborn children in Michigan was approved today by the Michigan House.

Lower, of Cedar Lake, expressed disgust at an emerging movement encouraging people to celebrate their abortions. He said some people have even thrown parties to celebrate their abortions, with cake and other refreshments.

“Regardless of the circumstances, abortion is the ending of a precious human life. It is never the cause for celebration,” Lower said. “We must continue to guard against policies that chip away at the protections afforded to our unborn children and stand strong against attempts to weaken our state’s strong safeguards for its most vulnerable residents.”

At the state level, Lower said Michigan has a long and unbroken history of continuously prohibiting abortion since 1846. He introduced the resolution after legislators in New York and Virginia voted to legalize third-trimester abortions.

“Recently, political leaders in other states have passed legislation easing regulations on abortions and openly discussed whether doctors have an obligation to provide treatment to babies who survive late-term abortions,” Lower said. “This resolution is a signal to the residents of our state that we are not going backward on abortion. The Michigan House will not follow other states into extremism.”
