Rep. Lower: Giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants a dangerous idea
RELEASE|August 5, 2019

State Rep. Jim Lower today said he is strongly opposed to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s radical proposal to issue Michigan driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

Lower, of Greenville, said Michigan should focus on reforms that improve the lives of law-abiding citizens, rather than making life easier for individuals who willfully break the law by residing here illegally.

“Anyone who enters the country and continues to live here illegally is breaking the law, and they should not be rewarded for doing so,” Lower said. “The governor’s proposal would send the wrong message to law-abiding citizens and individuals who choose to follow the legal path to citizenship.”

Lower said such a policy is against state law, and vowed to fight against any legislation proposing a change.

“Handing driver’s licenses over to illegal immigrants is a radical idea that opens the door to a whole host of other problems,” Lower said. “My top concern is for the integrity of our elections. Gov. Whitmer’s proposal would make our system more susceptible to voter fraud and abuse.”

Lower has taken a hard stance against illegal immigration and played an instrumental role in advancing legislation banning sanctuary cities in the House last term.
