Rep. Lilly spearheads plan to help local school districts train educators
RELEASE|June 7, 2019

State Rep. Jim Lilly has introduced a plan that would allow experienced teachers and administrators to come out of retirement to help with an effort aimed at leadership development in high-poverty schools across West Michigan.

Lilly, of Park Township, said the legislation will assist with an ongoing program to improve academic outcomes by developing the leadership skills of K-12 teachers and administrators. The High Impact Leadership for School Renewal Project, made possible by more than $12 million in federal grant funding, is a partnership between Western Michigan University, Reading Now Network and the General Education Leadership Network.

“The program relies on highly qualified people who work side-by-side with school districts to improve academic outcomes, and they’ve found that retirees are some of the best people for the job,” Lilly said. “The only problem is, recent retirees can’t participate while continuing to receive their retirement benefits.”

Lilly’s legislation, House Bill 4694, allows retired public school employees to maintain their retirement benefits if they come back to work to help implement the grant program.

“Education leaders from all throughout West Michigan are working together on this fantastic regional effort to improve educational outcomes for our kids,” Lilly said. “We must do everything we can to get the best people in place to keep the momentum going.”

The plan has been referred to the House Government Operations Committee for consideration.
