Rep. Lightner proposal honoring fallen first responder now law
RELEASE|January 8, 2020

A portion of I-94 will be known as the “Trooper Manuel H. Fields Memorial Highway” after a plan from state Rep. Sarah Lightner was recently signed into law by the governor.

Trooper Manuel H. Fields was conducting a traffic stop on Aug. 27, 1994 on a westbound stretch of I-94 when a vehicle crossed the fog line and fatally struck him while colliding with the Trooper’s squad car and the vehicle that was pulled to the side of the road.

“Like the noble actions and work of Trooper Fields, our law enforcement personnel continually put themselves in danger on behalf of our citizens and state,” said Lightner of Springport. “The sacrifice Trooper Fields made for his fellow people and community through his service won’t be forgotten.”

Under House Bill 4572, which became Public Act 167 of 2019, the designated section of I-94 will run from Hawkins Road to the US-127 interchange. The Michigan Memorial Highway Act was enacted in 2001 and allows for the naming of bridges and highways within the state.
