State Rep. Tim Kelly today commended the decision by the Michigan Department of Transportation to name MBS International Airport in Freeland as Michigan Airport of the Year, saying the designation will raise public awareness about the airport’s new state-of-the-art terminal.

The award salutes the airport’s new $55 million terminal that opened in October 2012, nearly a year ahead of schedule. The terminal “benefits not only the Midland, Bay City and Saginaw areas, but the entire Michigan airport system,” the award reads.

“The ‘Airport of the Year’ designation is great news for MBS because it shines a spotlight on the facility’s premier amenities, both to individual travelers and the corporate world,” said Kelly, R-Saginaw Township. “The new state-of-the-art terminal could be a catalyst for positive change for the entire Great Lakes Bay Region.

“Companies looking to relocate or expand consider many benchmarks, including the area’s infrastructure capabilities,” he said.  “The new airport terminal will help position our region as a leading candidate for business growth and new jobs.”
