Portion of M-53 in Macomb County renamed the Sergeant Wouters Memorial Highway

State Rep. Pamela Hornberger supports a plan to honor fallen Warren Police Detective Sgt. Christopher Michael Wouters by renaming a portion of M-53 in Macomb County.

The section between 14 Mile Road and south to 8 Mile Road would be known as the Sergeant Wouters Memorial Highway through legislation introduced in the Michigan House.

“Sergeant Christopher Michael Wouters is a hero who died trying to keep families safe,” said Hornberger, of Chesterfield Township.  “This highway memorial will recognize his bravery and honor his devotion to the community.”

Wouters was killed in the line of duty on Oct. 11, 2000, while trying to disarm a suspected drug dealer.

Wouters was a police veteran for 19 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Wayne State University, where he was an All-American second baseman and was inducted into the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame.

He left behind his wife, son, two daughters, parents, brothers, sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

In 2008, the city of Warren officially named the Warren Police headquarters the Christopher M. Wouters Police Headquarters Building.

House Bill 6147 has been referred to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
