Proposal includes development in Mecosta County

State Rep. Michele Hoitenga, of Manton, today voted in favor of a plan to construct a rustic campground development in Mecosta County as part of wide-ranging legislation advancing through the Michigan House.

The $50,000 included in the legislation will help build the campground at Fork Township Park, located north of Barryton on M-66. Future features will include updated hiking and biking trails, a trailhead for a proposed route from Barryton to the Pere Marquette Rail Trail and a BMX biking course.

“Eventually winter will retreat from Northern Michigan and residents are going to be out and about throughout our state looking for activities to enjoy with their families,” Hoitenga said. “This plan will provide Mecosta County with a new attraction to further boost their recreational offerings. I was proud to fight for this project and I look forward to seeing the finished product.”

The full plan includes $26 million for 34 recreational development projects and 30 land acquisition projects statewide. The project investments outlined in the proposal were recommended by the Natural Resources Trust Fund Board in December. Recommendations are subject to approval by the Michigan Legislature, a process recently started within the House Appropriations Committee.

Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from the development of minerals on state land and is designated on an annual basis in partnership with local governments.

House Bill 4244 advances to the Senate for further consideration.
