Rep. Hoitenga continuing to fight for critical state funding
RELEASE|December 4, 2019

House approves new supplemental budget plan

State Rep. Michele Hoitenga, of Manton, today voted to restore key funding vetoed by the governor two months ago, protecting Michigan workers, veterans, children and families.

The governor originally issued a total of 147 line-item vetoes within a budget proposal previously approved by the Legislature before the Oct. 1 constitutional deadline.

Wednesday’s votes provide a significant step toward getting much of the vetoed funding back in place. Hoitenga said she is hopeful the governor will eventually offer her signature and end current fiscal year uncertainties for people throughout the state who have been impacted by the impasse.

“Since a vast majority of people in Michigan – including many I represent and speak with every day – viewed the governor’s 45-cent per gallon gas tax increase as an ill-conceived idea, we have worked to develop a budget solution to help fund key areas of everyday life in our state,” Hoitenga said. “I hope the governor has had some time to reflect on what her vetoes mean for people as funding deadlines go by. People in Northern Michigan and myself are hopeful for an end to this standoff. It’s time we come together as a state government and get this done.”

The plan reverses the governor’s $13 million in cuts to a program allowing sheriffs to hire patrols for secondary roads – helping keep Michigan’s communities safer. Funding will also be restored for school safety grants and county veterans programs while adjustments will ensure public charter school students get the same investment from the state as all other public school students.

Those who seek medical care in rural areas will also be assisted, with additional money slotted for obstetrician services and rural hospitals serving relatively high rates of Medicaid and low-income patients. The plan’s continued commitment to such hospitals includes Spectrum Health Hospital in Reed City and Munson Healthcare in Cadillac.

The spending proposals will now move to the Senate for review.
