Rep. Hoitenga to once again chair House Communications and Technology Committee
RELEASE|January 16, 2019

State Rep. Michele Hoitenga will continue her work to increase broadband capability for every corner of the state while also addressing other technological issues that arise within Michigan during the new legislative term.

Hoitenga will chair the five-member House Communications and Technology Committee during the 2019-20 legislative session. She also served as committee chair during her first term representing Michigan’s 102nd House District.

“I am honored to keep up with this important assignment,” said Hoitenga, of Manton. “Working with stakeholders and experts on issues pertaining to telecommunications and emerging technologies for the past two years will create a great deal of continuity going forward into this term. I am eager for the opportunity to represent the people of Michigan again in this capacity.”

Proposals overseen and advanced by the committee during the 2017-18 legislative term included eliminating government red tape standing in the way of broadband expansion plans, increased cybersecurity protections, upgraded 9-1-1 services and safeguards for public interests in the face of growing drone use.

The legislative package for state oversight on drones was the end result of a 27-member Unmanned Aircraft Systems Task Force appointed by the governor. The group worked with Hoitenga and other legislators to develop statewide recommendations on the operation, use and regulation of drones in Michigan.

“The process was – very literally – listening to the people of Michigan when doing the people’s business,” Hoitenga said. “It was a tribute to the hard work done by members of the committee and their ability to work with those coming forward with suggestions. I look forward to similar constructive dialogue continuing in this term.”

Hoitenga will also serve on House Committees on Regulatory Reform; Families, Children and Seniors; and Insurance.
