Rep. Hank Vaupel Weekly Column: May 20, 2019
RELEASE|May 20, 2019

Last week, the House of Representatives passed long-overdue reforms to fix Michigan’s broken car insurance system. This is a major issue I hear about from residents, and understandably so. Currently, we pay the highest premiums in the nation, harming our families and holding our state back. After much testimony and deliberation, the Legislature had the opportunity to pass a real solution, and we took it.

First and foremost, the House plan guarantees reduced rates for all drivers in the personal injury protection (PIP) portion of their policies no matter which coverage plan they choose, immediately slashing the car insurance bill for most families. Additionally, drivers already enrolled in health insurance plans which cover auto injuries will have the choice to entirely opt out of medical coverage from their auto insurance, including seniors with retiree health coverage such as Medicare. This is simply a common sense bill, eliminating a double charge on Michigan drivers.

Our plan also reins in out-of-control, inflated medical charges for auto accidents while ensuring those catastrophically injured in the past will continue receiving lifetime health care. Additionally, those wishing to retain the unlimited coverage would have the option to do so. Overall, the House plan provides more oversight and transparency while ensuring residents are not abused by a broken system. The Legislature has delivered a solution.

On Saturday, I participated in the first Out of the Darkness walk at Howell High School to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Stephanie Harris and Gigi Jackson did a tremendous job organizing the event, which had a great outpouring of support for the community with over 200 participants. It is important to make it abundantly clear to our friends, families, and neighbors we are there to help them when facing difficult times.

It was great seeing so many supporters of Special Olympics Michigan at the Capitol on Tuesday. They were in Lansing to speak with legislators about their various programs and many success stories. The achievements of these athletes are truly inspiring, and their message of commitment and overcoming is an example to all.
