RELEASE|March 18, 2019

Congratulations to the Fowlerville Fourth of July Committee on another successful chili cook-off! Over 20 different delicious chili recipes were available to sample, and the many visitors made for a great night of fellowship. Thank you to the participants, judges, volunteers, and all who attended for making it such a successful night, and special congratulations to the winning chefs!

Last Thursday was Genesis House’s 12th annual spaghetti dinner, which supports tremendous programs for the mentally challenged in our community. It was encouraging to see the room packed with so many people supporting such a great organization.

On that note, I had the opportunity in Lansing this week to recognize Retro-a-go-go of Howell as a Genesis House Employment Partner, presenting them with a tribute signed by state Sen. Lana Theis, Rep. Ann Bollin, and myself. Thank you to Retro-a-go-go for being a strong part of our community!

It was an honor to once again serve as master of ceremonies for Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Bowl for Kids’ Sake event at Striking Lanes in Hartland. It is always a great time that serves an even better cause of providing positive mentors for our youth. Thank you to the incredible number of people who supported the event!

With March is Reading Month underway, I had the privilege this week of reading to students at Smith and Kreeger elementary schools in Fowlerville; Challenger, Southwest, and Voyager elementary schools in Howell; and Charyl Stockwell Academy in Hartland. I look forward to visiting more classrooms as the month continues, and I hope you will take this opportunity to read to the young people in your life.

The Livingston County Community Alliance held its monthly meeting this week, and the conversation was on concerns over youth use of e-cigarettes and vaping. County-wide research showed a significant increase in youth vaping, with 28% of our young people having vaped in the past month. The survey also showed an increase in nicotine and marijuana usage across grades. It was an important conversation about the well-being of our young people.
