Rep. Hank Vaupel Weekly Column: January 27, 2019
RELEASE|January 27, 2019

This week, I reintroduced a bill which would require retailers selling alcoholic beverages to post a warning sign of the effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is caused by any intake of alcohol during pregnancy and hinders physical and mental development of newborns. Sadly, this is a serious problem facing our state, and it is important for expectant mothers to be aware of the risks.

It was a privilege to attend an event honoring Livingston County resident David Imber on Wednesday at the Howell American Legion. He is a police officer and Army combat veteran struggling with a non-curable form of brain cancer. His life of sacrifice and service is an inspiration to us all, and I wish God’s blessing on him and his family.

The same night, my office visited a presentation on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) held at the Howell Carnegie District Library. Dr. Stephen Brown, a local chemist with 45 years of experience, gave an overview of the problem facing our state and answered questions. This is a serious issue which will continue to be addressed by both Livingston County and the state. Thank you to Dr. Brown and the Brighton/Howell Area Unit of the League of Women Voters for organizing the event.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently published a reminder to Michigan’s anglers that there is a mandatory registration requirement for muskellunge. A catch must be reported within 24 hours by visiting Michigan.gov/registerfish, calling (844) 345-3473, or making an appointment with any DNR Customer Service Center.

There was also an update to smelt fishing regulations. Under the new law, anglers fishing for smelt, alewife, or other bait fish can use no more than three lines per person, with no more than six hooks or lures on all lines. For more information on these updates, visit Michigan.gov/fishingguide.
