Rep. Matt Hall and the state House today approved a historic bipartisan plan that delivers significant car insurance savings for Michigan drivers while providing more personal choice in coverage options.

Hall helped the House approve a plan guaranteeing lower rates by giving drivers more choice on personal injury protection coverage, stopping price gouging on medical services for car accident victims, and combating fraudulent claims. All Michigan drivers will save money on the PIP portion of their policies, and many could save hundreds of dollars a year, depending on which coverage options they choose.

The bipartisan solution – coming after weeks of negotiations – is designed to end Michigan’s long tenure as the state with the most expensive car insurance in the nation. The plan should soon be headed to the governor for her expected signature.

“This plan enacts the reforms Michigan needs to truly provide freedom of choice for drivers when selecting car insurance coverage that best meets their needs,” said Hall, R-Emmett Township. “If drivers want unlimited coverage, they can buy unlimited coverage. If they want a less expensive option, they can choose one. The bottom line: Drivers win, and get significant financial relief from stringent government mandates that were costing them hundreds of dollars every year.”

Michigan’s current costs are high largely because it’s the only state mandating unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance. The bipartisan reform plan allows those currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options.

The legislation is Senate Bill 1
