Rep. Hall: Governor should accept Michigan Legislature’s budget plan

Rep. Matt Hall said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer should sign budget bills recently approved by the Michigan Legislature, avoiding a government shutdown while putting more money into schools and road repairs without her proposed 45-cent per gallon gas tax increase.

“People said ‘no’ to the governor’s massive tax increase, and she walked away from budget negotiations,” said Hall, R-Marshall, after the Legislature concluded its budget votes this week. “We had to finish the budget without her, so I worked with everyone – Republicans and Democrats – to put together a good and responsible plan. This budget invests in our kids and our roads – and it respects hardworking taxpayers who are paying the bills because we’re not asking them for more money. It’s a great example of how to make our state a better place without raising taxes.”

The schools budget approved by the Legislature includes a record $15.2 billion for Michigan students, increasing the foundation allowance by more than $300 million — up to $240 more per student. Every school district within Hall’s legislative boundaries will receive the additional $240 per student, which translates to hundreds of thousands of dollars for many individual districts.

Additional support is provided for career and technical education, special education, early literacy, school safety and several other programs.

Another $400 million is invested in road and bridge repairs, continuing the Legislature’s commitment to improving roads without tax increases or cuts to essential services. Michigan’s Department of Transportation budget will top $5 billion and provide more money for road repairs than ever before.
