State Rep. Matt Hall (R-Marshall) today issued the following statement in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s comments about reopening Michigan for business in the coming weeks. In a Friday tele-town hall hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber, Gov. Whitmer expressed her hopes to reopen the economy safely and slowly by relaxing certain restrictions on Michigan workers and job providers in low-risk sectors – perhaps through a regional approach – beginning May 1 depending on data surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak:

“The governor’s change in tone is a refreshing sign that indicates she’s willing to work with the Legislature on reopening Michigan for business sensibly and safely. The public health crisis we find ourselves in today will be remembered throughout history – and it’s our response to it that will play an important role in how history is written. That’s why simultaneously protecting public health and people’s livelihoods is integral as we continue forward in the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Together, in the spirit of bipartisanship, I know we can find an innovative, meaningful solution – one that takes a regional approach – to get Michigan families back to work while mitigating the risk of COVID-19.”
