Lawmaker works to reverse key vetoes by governor

State Rep. Annette Glenn, R-Midland, this week voted in favor of a supplemental budget plan to restore funding for several vital state programs – including two of Rep. Glenn’s highest priorities.

More than $2 million in funding for Centers for Independent Living was restored by the House this week.

“The funding for independent living ensures people with disabilities can live independently within their own communities,” Rep. Glenn said. “This funding is crucial for our communities and so many other parts of the state. I am happy the House voted to restore this funding, and hope it will be approved by the Senate and governor soon.”

Additionally, $250,000 in funding for the Children’s Choice Initiative was restored.

“The Children’s Choice Initiative has trained teachers on literacy best practices across the region and we have seen a dramatic improvement of test scores in the classrooms where teachers have gone through the training,” Glenn said. “Literacy is crucial to the success of all children and it’s important that we invest in training and programs that work to further improve our literacy rates.”

Rep. Glenn also voted to restore funding for our veterans, including for the Buddy-to-Buddy Program.

“This essential program allows our American heroes struggling with PTSD or substance abuse to connect with other veterans who can support and check in on them daily,” Glenn said. “As a wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, and sister-in-law of veterans, and chair of the Military and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee, I absolutely see the importance of this program.”

Rep. Glenn also voted to restore funding for:
• $1 million for child advocacy centers, which provide support to children during and after the investigative process for mistreatment and abuse.
• $5 million for high water grants, which help local communities deal with damage caused by high-water levels along the Great Lakes shoreline and inland waterways.
• $1 million for human trafficking survivors, offering two long-term shelters for survivors.
• $10 million for the state’s coronavirus response and $15 million for a coronavirus fund if additional future funding is needed.

“These budget restorations are a huge step in the right direction for the people of Michigan,” Glenn said. “Our families expect and deserve the Legislature and governor to work together for the sake of our economy, children, public health, and natural resources. This goes to show when we work together, keeping the best interests in mind of our residents, we can do amazing things for our state.”
